Comparison of sputum induction to bronchoal veolar lavage as collecting methods in the diagnosis of Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia (PCP) in Mulago Hospital

Abstract

Pneumocystis carinii pneumoni(PCP)is an opportunistic infection that occurs in immunosuppressed populations, especially patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infection. PCP occurs at some point in the course of disease in about 85% of patients with HIV/AIDS. Worodria et al confirmed PCP by bronchoscopy in 38.6% patients who were sputum smear negative for AFBs. Bronchoscopy is an expensive procedure that most people could not afford while sputum induction (SI) is simple and expensive.
