Influence of sports management on football game development in secondary schools in Wakiso District Nangabo-Subcounty

Abstract

Using selected secondary schools in Wakiso District Nangabo sub-county, the study was intended to find out the influence of management on the development of the football game. The study objectives were; to establish how planning for the football game influenced its development, directing of the football game influenced its development and the way how budgeting for the football game fostered development in selected secondary schools in Wakiso District. This study employed a cross-sectional survey design to establish whether or not and to what extent a relationship existed between management the development of the football game in secondary schools. Census and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the 190 respondents from a study sample of 510 persons. Information was solicited through the use of face to face interviews with the head teachers, and self-administered questionnaires to football coaches/trainers and school footballers in the study area. Data collected using survey and questionnaire was computed to establish descriptive statistics and percentages with the help of SPSS computer package to facilitate analysis and discussion of findings. Pearson‟s correlation coefficient was used to establish the relationship between the study variables. Findings showed that the relationships between the planning for, directing and budgeting for and the development of the football game in secondary schools of Nangabo sub county were significant and positive (r=0.875, p < 0.05). The findings of the study also revealed that, (1) planning for the football game happened but was found wanting and alone affected the development by 10.7%. (2) Directing of the existing structure was easy and contributed 44.1% towards football development. (3) Budgeting and or funding of the game in secondary schools was necessary and contributed 64.4% to football development. The study concluded that planning, directing and budgeting are crucial ingredients of management if development of football in secondary schools is to happen. The study recommended that head teachers ensure that secondary school time tables have an integrated mix of sports/games with academic programs, government implements the sports policy in regard to; sports facilities per sub-county, an increased number of trained physical education personnel to include football coaches in schools, talent identification and nurture, affirmative action by school authorities and all concerned parties towards funding of the football game within schools is done if football development is to occur in schools.
