Factors affecting students’ performance in art and crafts at "O" Level in secondary schools in Lubaga South Division, Kampala District
Abstract
The study sought to establish the factors affecting students' performance in Art and Crafts at Ordinary level (“O” Level) in secondary schools in Lubaga South Division, Kampala District. Specifically the study sought to investigate the effect of teaching methods; effect of teaching materials and, the effect of students' attitude on the students' performance in Art and Craft at Ordinary level in secondary schools in Lubaga South Division Kampala District. This study was a cross-sectional survey which utilized both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques.
The population of the study included head teachers, teachers, and students who made up a study sample of 318 respondents; the majority of whom were randomly selected while the minority were conveniently selected. The study findings revealed that teaching methods and teaching materials were the major factors affecting students' performance in Art and Crafts at Ordinary level in secondary schools in Lubaga South Division. The study, however, found no significant relationship between students’ attitudes and their performance in Art and Crafts at Ordinary Level in Lubaga South Division. The study concluded that teaching methods and teaching materials significantly affect students' performance in Art and Crafts at Ordinary level and that there was no significant relationship between students' attitude and performance in Art and Crafts at 'O' level in secondary schools in Lubaga South Division. It was recommended that universities and other institutions of higher education should equip teacher trainees with skills of selecting appropriate teaching methods; and how to utilize teaching materials to facilitate learning; and that refresher courses should be organized for teachers of Art and Crafts. The study also recommended that the Ministry of Education and Sports, school foundation bodies and administrators should endeavour to provide the necessary Art and Crafts teaching materials.
