Local community involvement in the infrastructure development of secondary schools in Mpigi District

Abstract

The study sought to examine local community involvement in infrastructure development of secondary schools in Mpigi district. The study was guided by two objectives; 1. To find out local community contribution in infrastructural development programmes in secondary schools 2. To establish the factors hindering local community involvement in infrastructural development programmes of secondary schools. The study used descriptive cross section survey design with both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study was conducted in ten randomly selected secondary schools in Mpigi district. The sample used in the study consisted of Headteachers, PTA, BOG and local community. The data was collected using questionnaires and an interview guide. The data collected was analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and content analysis.

The study established that community was vital in the infrastructural development of secondary schools in Mpigi district but there were certain factors that limited local community involvement in infrastructure development of secondary school development programs.

The study concluded that local community is supportive of infrastructure development of secondary schools through providing local labor, physical materials and funding the infrastructure development programmes while they at the same time plan, monitor and cross check accountability. That local community had hindrances in its involvement in infrastructure development of secondary schools such as low levels of education, serious biting poverty and lack of common interests of local community people towards school projects and that with wide involvement of the community in the schools development programs, local community involvement in infrastructure development could be enhanced.

The study recommends that local community persons should be given platform in the planning and implementation of infrastructural development plans and programs by involvement in decision making and that the ministry of education and sports and secondary school administration should strengthen partnership though strengthening the policies that encourage partnerships.
