Incentives and employee commitment of lecturers in the College of Education and External Studies, Makerere University.
Abstract
The study sought to investigate and establish the influence of incentives on employee commitment of lecturers in Makerere University. It was guided by two objectives, that is to say to establish the influence of monetary, and non-monetary incentives on employee commitment of lecturers in the College of Education and External Studies, Makerere University. The study was both quantitative and qualitative. It involved the use of a cross sectional survey design, involving 106 academic and 20 administrative staff who were selected using stratified random sampling. Data was collected using a self-administered question for academic staff and interview guide for administrative staff. Data was analyzed using percentages, means and standard deviations at descriptive level. Yet the hypotheses of the study were tested using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient Index. Qualitative data was analyzed using thematic method following the main themes of the conceptual framework. The findings of the study revealed a highly positive significant relationship between monetary incentives and non-monetary incentives and employee commitment in the College of Education and External Studies, Makerere University. It was concluded that monetary incentives, non-monetary incentives have a highly positive significant relationship on the commitment of lecturers in Makerere University. To boost commitment of academic staff in Makerere University it was recommended that academic staff salaries, wages should be increased through widening the revenue sources of the University. Further, it was recommended that academic staff should be recognized for their outstanding performance, involved in decision making and delegated with responsibility to enable them get highly committed on the job.
