The Contribution of Teachers Parenting Roles on Students Discipline in Selected Catholic Founded Secondary Schools in Wakiso Vicariate Kampala Archdiocese.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of the roles played by teachers and how such roles influence students discipline in Catholic founded secondary schools in Wakiso Vicariate. The study aimed at establishing the exact roles teachers play in enhancing students discipline, the implications of teachers nurturing, protection and counseling roles on student’s discipline and finally identifying possible strategies teachers apply in enhancing discipline in Roman Catholic founded secondary schools in Wakiso Vicariate. The study adopted a phenomenological and ethnographic designs. It was mainly a qualitative study in nature. Given the occurrence of Covid-19 lockdown, the study targeted a limited and manageable number of purposefully selected students,teachers and school administrators in Wakiso Vicariate. The study reveals that that teachers play the following roles: they act as parents, they enforce domestic and school rules and regulations, checking on student attendances, motivating students discipline, monitoring, mentoring and serve as role models to ensure effective discipline among students. It was also revealed that teachers play the nurturing, protection and counseling roles and these have an important implications on students discipline. It was finally revealed that interventions like emphasizing Catholic religious’ teachings, emphasizing the role of guidance and counseling, involving all stakeholders in enforcing school rules are essential towards ensuring students discipline. From these findings, it is concluded that to ensure students discipline in Roman Catholic founded secondary schools, teachers must be constantly reminded and rewarded to exercise their roles in enforcing students discipline. It is also recommended that apart from the teachers all stakeholders need to be sensitized that teachers nurturing, protection and counseling are central in ensuring students discipline thus they ought to be supported in all possible way to fulfill their obligations. Finally, interventions like offering prayers based on Catholic religious teachings, awakening the roles of having disciplinary committees, using available communication plat forms on assemblies, notice boards to avail rules and regulations of the school would that strongly enforce discipline in Roman Catholic founded secondary schools in Wakiso Vicariate.
