Analysis of electronic waste management in Gulu Municipality, Northern Uganda
Abstract
Whereas extensive studies have been carried out to explore the impact of electronic waste management worldwide, very few of these have focused on Developing Africa and Uganda as a whole. This study looked at analysis of Electronic Waste Management in Gulu Municipality, Northern Uganda. The study was guided by the following objectives that included to: find out the prevalent forms of e-waste known and owned amongst residents in Gulu Municipality; assess the e-waste management practices being implemented by residents in Gulu Municipality and; investigate the factors associated with the prevailing e-waste management situation among residents in Gulu Municipality so as to make recommendations regarding the most optimal measures to avert costs associated with improper electronic waste management. Cross-section survey and a case study research design were used to collect data from the Gulu municipality. Random and purposive sampling techniques were used to select the respondents. Microsoft Excel and SPSS were used to analyze the data and presented using tables. It was found out that effective control over e-waste disposal should provide reasonable assurance regarding the reliability of method of electronic waste disposal and interventions mechanism that can be used to protect the environment. This exercise provides reasonable assurance both to management and stakeholders about the e-waste management in the municipality. Environmental policy guideline is most effective when systems is built into the environmental entity’s infrastructure and are a part of the essence of the organization.
