dc.description.abstractThe major focus of the study was to examine the extent to which gender equality has been institutionalized in Secondary Schools in Uganda, focusing on Kitende Senior Secondary School in Wakiso District. The birth of Universal education policies (UPE-1997 & USE-2007) was implicit that schools would provide a suitable platform for promotion of gender equality. Therefore, systems with components that reflect institutionalization of gender equality required to be examined. This study was guided by three objectives. First- to identify gender issues at Kitende SSS, second – to document strategies undertaken to address gender issues at Kitende SSS and lastly- to document the various challenges encountered while institutionalizing gender equality at Kitende SSS. Methodology: The study employed a Case study research design- a qualitative research approach. Data collection methods included purposive sampling of participants, in-depth interviews with the selected participants, focus group discussions, document review and observation of the school environment. Findings, the study revealed that 1) Gender equality was being partially institutionalized at Kitende SSS. For example, changes in classroom setting arrangements were introduced to improve interaction and participation between girls and boys.2) Efforts were made to address gender related violence using a gender-sensitive approach, but challenges arose when victims dropped out before investigations were completed. 3)Despite some progress, there were indications of lack of institutionalization of gender equality such un equal number of females and male administrators in key school management positions, the gender-blind school rules, reports of sexual harassment, and unequal opportunities in co-curricular activities. Challenges; A significant challenge to fully implement gender equality was the lack of resources to consistently support the initiative. For example, the new sitting arrangement was implemented only in three classes due to limited resources. Recommendations; 1) The government should establish a national system for monitoring and enforcing gender equality institutionalization. 2)Enhance the skills and capacity of stake holders involved in promoting gender equality in schools. 3) Implement strict punishments for violators of gender responsive school regulations and guidelines. 4)Conduct regular gender awareness. campaigns to educate students and school community about gender issues and strategies for antiunionization. 5)Involve NGOs in promoting gender equality through education and information sharing in secondary schools. Conclusion; The study concluded by emphasizing the need for education system improvements in Secondary schools and implementation of the provided recommendations to effectively institutionalize gender equality in Ugandan secondary schools.en_US
