Assessment of maintenance procedures of world food programme constructed feeder roads in South Sudan

Abstract

The study investigated the assessment of maintenance procedures of WFP Constructed feeder roads a case study of South Sudan. The specific objectives included to; determine the effectiveness of maintenance procedures of WFP constructed feeder roads, determine the sustainability of maintenance procedures of the WFP constructed feeder roads, and examine the different procedures undertaken by South Sudan government and WFP to maintain WFP constructed feeder roads. A descriptive survey research design was adopted with both qualitative and quantitative methods used to supplement each other. The sample size of 48 respondents was drawn from a study population of 65 comprising of WFP employees and the Government officials of South Sudan. Findings revealed that the road maintenance of WFP constructed roads is entirely on the private partners and donations that is got for maintaining these feeder roads.in addition, WFP rely on grants and funds raised to maintain feeder roads in South Sudan. Majority of respondents agreed that there is no proper sustainability maintenance procedure in place to maintain roads constructed by WFP in South Sudan. This is confirmed by the majority respondents 96% of the respondents are not sure about the existence of sustainable program for maintenance of feeder roads in South Sudan. It was concluded that the government should allocate finances for road maintenance. The increasing burden of maintaining feeder roads on WFP is becoming unbearable, therefore it is incumbent upon the government to take the responsibility of maintaining feeder roads in South Sudan. The study recommended that; government of South Sudan establish sustainable program for maintenance of feeder roads in order to sustain the roads that have been constructed. The government can do this by enacting laws and legal regime that will help to finance maintenance of feeder roads in South Sudan.
