Abstract: The study was about training, development and retention of support staff in Makerere University. The case studies were the School of Education and the Faculty of Law. The purpose of the study was to investigate training and development practice and retention of the support staff in Makerere University. The study was designed to pin point specific training and development information needs, problems/ constraints and possible solutions. The study covered support staff training and development. The study was mainly qualitative using three research instruments, which included: open-ended and structured questionnaires, observation guide and an interview guide. The study findings show the support staff training and development practice such as not all the support staff being actively involved in the practice, there is a staff development programme that centrally organizes trainings, and staff share work related ideas on job. Findings further showed that there is a problem of retention of the support staff as a result of no effective training and development. The study concludes that support staff training and development was very essential and, should be done for all support staff members at various levels. There was a need for; new research on the training needs and giving reasonable and attractive benefits by the University in order to improve on the people performance to meet the required standards. This used make them want to stay on the job. The study recommends a comprehensive training and development practice for the support staff at all levels, improvement of Human Resource Information Systems, more Research on Training and Development of staff, Putting in place Strong All Embracing Staff Development Committee and seeking independent Sources of Funding.
