| Abstract: | The ten-kilometre long Nakivubo Channel is the main storm water transport canal for Kampala City in Uganda. It discharges into Lake Victoria. For a long time the channel has been considered to be of inadequate capacity to transport all the storm water generated within its catchment area. This inadequacy is manifested in excessive flooding after even moderate downpours. To address the problem of flooding, the channel is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation. At one of the points a reinforced concrete retaining wall was constructed to form a linning of the channel side. After a major downpour there was significant movement of the wall towards the channel. Construction of similar walls halted pending investigations to establish the cuase of wall movement. This paper discusses the probable cuases of the wall failure and possible designs that have been proposed for the channel lining |
