Abstract: Greater Kuala Lumpur is today facing a serious problem of traffic congestion. This problem is due in part to the recent increase in automobile ownership and use. While some big Asian cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore have been able to establish transport systems that are efficient and relatively free from traffic congestion, others like Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok are still grappling and playing the catch up game. In addition, cities that have managed to develop efficient and effective transport systems have also succeeded in reducing and alleviating traffic congestion. This paper examines the experience of Greater Kuala Lumpur (also known as the Klang valley urban region) in alleviating traffic congestion. Specifically, the paper explores and examines policies and programs that have been implemented in the region to curb traffic congestion. The paper also draws lessons from international experiences especially Singapore for Greater Kuala Lumpur. It concludes that the best approach to tackle traffic congestion in the Greater Kuala Lumpur is by implementing demand management strategies such as car restraint.
