| Abstract: | This project report concerns the design of a Framework that helps Institutions of Higher Learning in securing their electronic data. Security is a growing threat to all companies, organizations and institutions worldwide. The brand of business that institutions of higher learning are involved; where information is core, makes them even more potential targets than any other.
Despite the fact that computer networks for institutions of higher learning are the same as those of other organizations, there are special security needs that this environment presents because students records must be strictly confidential. There is also concern over students attempting to hack into the institution’s systems and altering their grades. This framework proposes guidelines that can be followed in order to meet the challenges of securing electronic data. It focuses on the following core areas of security; Access Control, Threat Prevention, Incident Response, Information Security policies, and standards.
The study established that institutions of higher learning collect, process, store and transmit electronic data but there were no documented procedures for securing this data. This research has therefore suggested appropriate controls. Electronic data is an asset thus it must be conserved, tracked, accounted for, and protected. |
