Issue Date: Dec-2008
Abstract: The use of computer based technologies in designing decision support systems in the developing countries has not been explored widely. This study focused on the development of a decision support system to be used by a bus company for scheduling based on resource monitoring. The studied problem refers to operations of a fleet of buses operating on several routes. In this study, the utilization of decision support systems supports the planning and management of bus operations. The combination of carefully selected technology frameworks resulted into a new decision support tool. The benefits of this new system are: optimum use of the bus company resources, transportation cost reduction, risk management and customer service improvement. The project concludes by emphasizing how new technologies can support the transportation sector with the help of operations research algorithms embedded in software applications.
