Issue Date: Mar-2008
Abstract: The research was carried out to investigate farmers' agricultural needs and hindrances as regards to agricultural information dissemination. One of the reasons is that expert scientific advice regarding crop cultivation is no reaching the farming community in a timely manner. It is true that Uganda possesses a valuable agricultural knowledge and expertise. However, a wide information gap exists between the research and the practice. Ugandan farmers need timely expert advice to make them more productive and competitive. In this project report, the researcher made an effort to present a solution to bridge the information dissemination gap by designing a web based information dissemination system. The developed system is to disseminate agricultural information to the farming community to help them improve crop productivity. Some of the crucial benefits of the developed system are as follows: It is a flexible, user friendly, dynamic, reliable and it is also a scalable system which can be incrementally developed and extended to cover all the farmers (crops) of Uganda in a cost effective manner. It enables the farmer to cultivate a crop with expertise, by disseminating crop information which include; crop management, herbicides, pests, harvesting, nutrition, storage and transportation among others. With WBIDS, the lag period between research efforts to practice can be reduced significantly. Finally, the developed system assumes a great importance due to the trend of globalization, as it aims to provide agricultural information which is crucial to the Ugandan farmer hence making him competitive both in the local and world market.
