Title: An expert system for diagnosing heavy duty diesel engine faults
Authors: Nabende, Peter
Keywords: Computer system
Engine diagnosis
Issue Date: 18-Nov-2009
Abstract: Diagnosis of Heavy Duty Diesel Engines (HDDEs) requires mechanics with high technical skills or extensive experience on maintenance of HDDEs. These experts are usually scarce and may be expensive to hire. As a result of this scarcity, the diagnosis of HDDE faults can also take a longer time. Diagnosis of HDDE faults with recommendations from a computerized assistant can be highly useful. This project is about the development of an Expert System for diagnosing HDDE faults and recommendation of corrective action. With this Expert System used, there can be utilization of lower experienced mechanics diagnosing HDDE faults and also for training. The correct and timely diagnosis and correction of faults leads to high availability of HDDEs for the services they are required for. The development of this Expert System also yields valuable data for what works in the area of HDDE fault diagnosis fueling Artificial Intelligence research that will provide even better applications in this area.
