| Abstract: | Municipal solid waste is an environmental problem in both developed and developing countries. However, its management varies across countries. This study looks for willingness to pay for solid waste management in Fort-portal municipality from the households to the skips and from
the skips to the dumping ground. It is based on the hypothesis that the higher the level of formal education and levels of income, the higher the willingness to pay.
The major component of solid waste generated is domestic/household refuse. The current management practices in the municipality are inadequate due to a number of constraints, and this creates potential adverse effects on the environment. The study was carried out in the Bazaar area (the centre of the municipality). It attempts to estimate the household's probability of willingness to pay for solid waste removal in order to achieve an optimal level of management. It also suggests economic measurers that can be
adopted to improve the existing solid waste management systems in the municipality. The
logistic regression model was used to analyse the data. The results of the study reveal that the majority of the households are less keen to pay for solid waste management. They indicate a very low probability of willingness to pay for solid waste removal both from the households to the skips and from the skips to the dumping ground. The recommendations of the study are that the Fort-portal municipal council imposes an initial collection charge of Shs.3000/= on average per year on every household. The municipal council
should also intensify sensitization progr-ammes to create awareness and promote community participation, equally important the coincil should support and encourage private firms and NGOs that would engage-in the promotion of low cost waste management techniques. |
