Abstract: The continuing increase in population is increasing the demand on land resources for settlement, food production and other developments and on freshwater supply both at small and large catchment extent. There is lack of integrated and coordinated land use planning in River Kafu catchment, which may lead to rapid depletion of catchment resource base both in quality and quantity. Deforestation, afforestation, bush burning, overgrazing and urbanization were identified as the main land use practices with the potential to adversely affect the hydrological regime in the sub catchment. Statistical parameters of streamflows in River Kafu were used to identify the changes in the hydrologic regime. Results revealed that the land use changes have not yet adversely affected the hydrological response of the catchment. However, stream flows in River Kafu have slightly reduced over the years, an indication of reducing catchment water yield. The Coup Model was used to carry out streamflow simulations so as to predict the possible impacts of land use/cover changes on the catchment hydrology. The study combined the understanding of and application of physical processes inherent in the catchment. The study results highlight the need for development of Decision Support System tools to help land use planners at catchment level. The Coup Model has been identified as one of the tools that can be used to carry out such assessments to facilitate decision making but requires more simplification. Detailed experimental set ups would be required to accurately calibrate the model.
