| Abstract: | The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the determinants of poverty in female headed-households, with Kiboga District as a case study. The dissertation investigated the relationship between gender and poverty, measured by basic welfare amenities. The findings established that female headed households were generally poor; they lacked major welfare amenities such as adequate education levels of household heads, a living wage, access to markets, access to poverty eradication programs, manageable families, "good" jobs and good health facilities. This lack of welfare amenities was found to be the major determinant of poverty among female headed households of Kiboga District. With help of semi-structured interviews and discussions, stratified random sampling
method was used in the collection of primary data from ninety respondents of Rwamata, Ntwetwe, and Kiboga town council. Household budget survey, (1998) and Integrated Household Survey, (1992) were the secondary data sources. The National poverty line (1999) was used as a standard measure. The major recommendation suggested is to aim at improving accessibility to poverty eradication programmes through sensitisation, to increase gainful participation of the female headed households at village level. |
