| Abstract: | This study focuses on the challenges of eliminating child labour in St Balikuddembe market, as part of the problem of child labour in Uganda's informal sector. The study basically sought to assess awareness about employing children in St. Balikuddembe market, children's perceptions
about the actual work and conditions under which they work, analyse measures put in place to address child labour in St. Balikuddembe market and assess responses of employers of child-vendors, towards initiatives aiming at addressing child labour. lt was evident that sexual abuse
was rampant with, the girls being the most abused. The study discovered that all children were involved in exploitative work and some of them were involved in hazardous work like metal fabrications. In general terms, the study established that orphaned children dominated child vendors; children had attained education to Primary level, but were not in school at the time of the
study. The findings from 20 children, 10 key informants, and four focus group discussions and four case studies, showed that children were exposed to abuses and exploitation, there was low awareness about child labour, children perceived their work as harmful. lt was established that
poverty at family level was the major reason for the persistence of child labour in St. Balikuddembe market, there was lack of clear understanding of Children's rights and the policy on child labour. Other challenges included unclear policy on UPE, contradictions between implementation of
Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) and eradication of poverty through UPE, HIV/AIDS and poor parenting methods. The conclusions and recommendations have been made. lt is the researcher's hope that the information will contribute deeper insight to the policy effort for addressing the problem of child labour in the informal sector and indeed in the country. |
