| Abstract: | The study is about 'Accessing Special Needs Education by Children with Hearing
Disability in Uganda: A Case study on Uganda School for the Deaf - Ntinda'. The
primary objective is to examine the means, challenges and solutions in accessing special needs education by children with hearing disability.
The study employed different research instruments in order to gather a wide range of information from respondents who were insightful in generating a meaningful discussion.
Data collected from the children with hearing disability in Ntinda School for the Deaf was the basis of this study. The researcher used an interview schedule to collect both the qualitative and quantitative data for the study.
The study findings show that at least some part of the community is aware that it is
possible for children with hearing disability to access special needs education but still there are not many children attending school compared to the numbers of children with hearing disability. It was found that education for children with hearing disability has been sidelined in Uganda.
This has not been made any better by social factors such as negative attitudes, lack of
awareness, lack of trained teachers, neglect, superstition and fear, that have led to isolation and delayed the mainstreaming of children with hearing disability in the development process. It was found out that these social factors started in homes and flowed into the community, hence making children with hearing disability of low priority
in the family.
Since education is a fundamental right for all, the researcher concludes by recommending that Government ensures that policies, guidelines and legal instruments are put in place to increase awareness, educate the public and implement what they already have on paper. |
