| Abstract: | Following the implementation of economic refonns by the Uganda government in the
90s, the economy registered enormous growth. During the same period, there was an evident increase in financial activity within the economy. However, soon after the year 2000, Uganda's economic growth rate declined. Moreover this happened after the introduction of the stock market that was expected to compound the level of financial activity, and hence economic growth. The researcher was thus prompted to examine the
development in the financial sector, that is in the banking and insurance industry, and in the stock market between 1996 and 2004. The researcher also examined the trend of Uganda's economic growth during the same period. Finally the researcher endeavored to establish the relationship between flnancial developrnent and economic growth. The study design was positivistic while the research strategies u'ere longitudinal, analyical, and correlational. The study established that indeed there was financial developrnent. The study also established that though the econoniic growth rate declined, the GDP increased consistently in absolute terms between the years. Furthermore, the study revealed that
banking, insurance and stock market development all positively correlated with economic growth. However the results relating to the stock market though positive were not significant. On further investigation, the study established that banking and insurance significantly influenced economic growth if they developed corporately rather than as individual sub sectors. |
