| Abstract: | Many People in Uganda are victims of Traumatic experiences. Previous studies have indicated that although individuals experience PTSD symptoms, thier functional adjustment depends on what these symptoms mean to them and that the majority remain functionally well adjusted. On the basis of these findings, it has been concluded by some researchers, for instance Summerfield (1995/1997 that PTSD is a concept of western psychology that may not apply to non-western contexts like Uganda.
This study examined the relationship between the subjective interpretation of traumatic experience and resilience to PTSD. Atotal of 50 respondents were purposively sampled and the researcher identified the symptoms experienced, what they mwant to the victims, the copying mechanisms adopted and how the individuals functional adjustment were affected by their experience. |
